Sangmi began her professional journey with a degree in accounting from New York University but soon realized her true passion lay in holistic healing. This led her to pursue a Master’s degree in Acupuncture from the Eastern School of Acupuncture and Traditional Medicine, where she gained a deep understanding of traditional Chinese medicine. Combining ancient healing techniques with a modern perspective, Sangmi is dedicated to helping patients restore balance, alleviate pain, and achieve overall wellness. With a compassionate and personalized approach, she strives to support each individual on their path to better health.

Acupuncture is a treatment that involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body to help relieve symptoms or promote healing. While it originated in traditional Chinese medicine, modern research and Western medical understanding offer some explanations for how it may work:

  1. Stimulates the nervous system: When needles are inserted, they activate sensory nerves in the skin and muscles. This sends signals to the brain and spinal cord, which can trigger the release of natural chemicals like endorphins (your body’s painkillers), serotonin (a mood booster), and others that help reduce pain and improve well-being.

  2. Improves blood flow: Needle insertion may increase circulation in certain areas, helping tissues receive more oxygen and nutrients—both of which are important for healing.

  3. Reduces inflammation: Acupuncture may help lower levels of inflammatory markers in the body, which can reduce swelling and promote recovery from injuries or chronic conditions.

  4. Regulates the autonomic nervous system: This part of the nervous system controls things like digestion, heart rate, and stress responses. Acupuncture seems to help balance it—promoting relaxation and reducing stress-related symptoms.

  5. Modulates pain perception: It can “distract” or alter how the brain perceives pain, which can be helpful for chronic conditions like migraines, arthritis, or fibromyalgia.
